Tayler Jones. Un'americana a San Godenzo (per 5 volte). Intervista bilingue di Ferragosto © n.c.
Tayler Jones è originaria di Venice Beach, Los Angeles, California. Ha 31 anni, è quasi laureata in architettura e adesso vive ad Eugene, Oregon (USA) con il suo fidanzato. Quest’estate per la quinta volta è stata in vacanza a San Godenzo. Un primato per i dati del turismo del piccolo paese della Valdisieve, battuto soltanto dai villeggianti in possesso di seconde case che sicuramente non affrontano un viaggio oltreoceano come lei. La sua, più che una vacanza, sembra un ritorno alle origini, anche se nel suo albero genealogico non ci sono tracce di questo. L’abbiamo intervistata per capire cosa la leghi così tanto a San Godenzo. 1-Quante volte sei stata a San Godenzo? Qual è stata la tua prima impressione legata a questo posto (se ricordi)? 1-How many Times have you been in San Godenzo? What was your first impression of this place (if you remember)? Quest’estate sono tornata per la quinta volta a San Godenzo! La prima volta è stata nel 1996 o 1997, quando ancora ero alle elementari; la seconda in età adolescenziale…forse nel 2002. Poi sono tornata due volte in età adulta, quando mia madre fece un corso di cucina e poi, infine, quando lei decise di trasferirsi qui (intorno al 2006). La prima volta a San Godenzo ero in viaggio con la mia famiglia. Mio padre aveva prenotato un soggiorno nella Villa di Emma (proprietaria dell’albergo ristorante Agnoletti, vedi foto), grazie all’aiuto dell’unica donna del paese che parlava inglese. Non sono sicura di come abbia scelto San Godenzo, ma penso che volesse farci vivere una parte autentica della Toscana. Ricordo ancora che, il giorno che siamo arrivati, siamo venuti in piazza per parlare con Emma e siamo rimasti stupiti per la presenza di una parata che scendeva lungo strada e dai paracadutisti in lontananza! Credo che sia stata una celebrazione o forse un festival di qualche genere... Siamo rimasti sorpresi di trovarci in un posto così piccolo che ci ha così impressionato tanto! This summer was my fifth time visiting San Godenzo. The first was in 1996 (?) or 1997 (?) when I was in elementary school, the second when I was a teenager, maybe around 2002 (?), then twice as a young adult-once when my mother took a cooking class and again when she moved there (around 2006, I'm guessing). During my first visit to S. Godenzo I was traveling with my family. My father had booked a stay in Emma's Villa with the help of the only woman in town who spoke English. I'm not sure how he picked S. Godenzo, but I think he wanted us to experience an authentic part of Tuscany. On the day we arrived we came to the town square to talk to Emma and were surprised by a parade coming down the street and parachuters in the distance! I believe it was a celebration of the town's anniversary, or maybe a festival of some kind. We were amazed to be in such a small place that made such a big impression on us! I think it was meant to be 2- Perché ti piace così tanto questo piccolo paese, adesso? 2-Why do you like so much this Little village now? Adoro questo piccolo paese perché quando cammini per le sue strade, stai camminando attraverso la storia. Ricordo di aver fatto una passeggiata da sola una volta (come fanno talvolta i lunatici adolescenti…) e di aver attraversato la zona dei vecchi lavatoi (vedi foto), dove le persone lavavano i vestiti insieme, in passato. Cosa deve aver visto questo posto nel corso degli anni! Ed eccola qui, una parte della città in un’era più moderna. Non troveresti qualcosa di simile da dove vengo io, perché ogni pezzo di spazio viene utilizzato e riutilizzato e in continua evoluzione. Apprezzo il rispetto di San Godenzo per la storia e la storia del luogo.
I love this "little village" because when you walk its streets you are walking through history. I remember taking a solo walk once (like moody teenagers do sometimes...) and coming across the area where people had washed their clothes together in years gone by. What this place must have seen over the years! And here it is still, a part of the town in a more modern era. You won't find something like that where I'm from, because every piece of space is used and reused and constantly changing. I appreciate S. Godenzo's respect for history and the story of the place. 3-Ti piacciono anche Firenze e la Toscana? 3-Do u like also Florence and Toscany? Certo che sì! Chiedi a chiunque se ama la Toscana e sono sicura che la risposta sarà sì! Firenze è costruita magnificamente e ha una storia così ricca di arte, commercio e attività. Anche se per me una delle cose migliori in Toscana è la natura. Le montagne, con le sue cascate e i fiumi, sono come un piccolo angolo di paradiso. Penso che in Toscana il sole sia diverso, più dorato. Absolutely- ask anyone if they love Tuscany and I'm sure they will say yes. Florence is built beautifully, and has such a rich history of art and industry. But for me one of the best things about Tuscany is nature. The mountains, with their waterfalls and rivers, are like a little piece of heaven. I think in Tuscany the sun is different, more golden. 4-Cosa ti piace dello stile di vita italiano? 4- What do you like about Italian Style of life? Ti prendi il tuo tempo! E ti esprimi! C’è un calore in tutto questo che è genuino e accogliente. Lo stile di vita italiano sembra ‘seguire il flusso’ e c’è un vero apprezzamento dei sensi, che penso sia bello. That you take your time! And you express yourselves! There's a warmth to that which is genuine and welcoming. The Italian style of life seems to ‘go with the flow’, and there's a real appreciation of the senses, which I think is beautiful. 5-Quanto è diverso il posto in cui vivi, negli Stati Uniti? 5- How different is the place where you live, in USA? Abbastanza diverso! Da dove vengo io c'è più attenzione al ‘fare’ (…l'impulso al realizzare) invece che all' ‘essere’ (godersi la vita), e l'ansia accompagna quel modo di pensare. Le persone possono essere un po’ più riservate negli Stati Uniti e avere più fretta. Negli USA è tutto molto più grande in scala, il che può essere eccitante ma toglie anche il calore della vita delle piccole città. Ci sono anche piccole differenze di stile, ad esempio a casa mi farebbe comodo andare a fare la spesa in pigiama. A S. Godenzo non oserei! Tuttavia ci sono anche somiglianze, soprattutto nello stato dell'Oregon. Le persone sono accoglienti, la natura è apprezzata e la comunità è forte. Quite different! Where I'm from there is more focus on "doing" (the drive to accomplish) instead of "being" (enjoying life), and anxiety accompanies that way of thinking. People can be a little more private in the US, and in more of a hurry. It's a lot bigger in scale, which can be exciting but also takes away the warmth of small town life. There are also little differences in style- for example, at home I would be comfortable going to do the shopping in my pajamas. In S. Godenzo I wouldn't dare! However there are similarities, especially in the state of Oregon. People are welcoming, nature is appreciated, and community is strong. 6- Se persone di San Godenzo (sto pensando ai tuoi contatti a Stefano, Anna, Gabriele…) verranno a trovarti, cosa pensi vorranno visitare? 6- If people of San Godenzo ( I’m thinking to Stefano, Anna, Gabriele etc...) will come to visit you, what do u think will be interested in visiting? E’ molto soggettivo, davvero. Gli Stati Uniti sono così grandi e vari che dovrebbero davvero essere pensati come tante regioni (simili all'Italia). Se un amico di S. Godenzo venisse a stare con me sulla costa occidentale, lo porterei a visitare le spiagge della California meridionale e forse alcuni posti più belli a nord, come Big Sur. Quindi potrei portarli alcune ore nel deserto di Joshua Tree, che penso sia uno dei posti più meravigliosi e bizzarri in California da visitare. Ovviamente assaggeremo della deliziosa cucina messicana e probabilmente mangeremo molto sushi fresco. Potrei finire portandoli più a nord verso le città di altri stati come Portland, Oregon o Seattle, Washington, in modo che possano avere una comprensione della cultura rilassata e dell'atteggiamento amorevole / inclusivo che è unico nella parte sinistra dell'America. E, per favore, non ti arrabbiare se dico che potrebbero assaggiare un caffè a Seattle che supera l'espresso di casa vostra! ;) It depends on the person, really. The US is so big and varied that it should really be thought of in regions (similar to Italy). If a friend from S. Godenzo came to stay with me on the West Coast I would take them to visit the beaches in Southern California and maybe some more beautiful places to the north, like Big Sur. Then I might drive them a few hours to the desert in Joshua Tree, which I think is one of the most wonderful and bizarre places in CA to visit. Of course we'd sample a lot of delicious Mexican cuisine, and probably eat a lot of fresh sushi. I might finish by taking them farther north to cities in other states like Portland, Oregon or Seattle, Washington so they could have an understanding of the laid back culture and loving/inclusive attitude that is unique to the left side of America. And, please don't be mad when I say, they might taste some coffee in Seattle that rivals the espresso back home! ;) 7- Tu sei stato a San Godenzo in diversi momenti della vita, con diverse persone della tua vita. Sembra un posto dove ti senti a casa, dove vieni quando devi girare una nuova pagina di vita.. Sei d’accordo? 7- You have been in San Godenzo in different moment of life, with different people. It sounds like a place where you feel at home, where you come when you have to turn a new page of life.... Do you agree? Sì, ho molte ‘istantanee’ di questo posto, in momenti diversi della mia vita: stupita dalle lucciole quando ero una bambina; a bazzicare con altri adolescenti nella piazza quando ero ragazzetta; di me che osservo mia madre crescere nel suo ‘vero io’ vivendo la vita qui, in San Godenzo, quando io ormai ero un po' più grande. Ho stabilito contatti con persone che amo e che considero familiari. Non so per quale motivo però sento che è un posto che segna diversi traguardi nella mia vita e apprezzo le opportunità che ho avuto di tornarci tante volte. È significativo per me che, nonostante la distanza e le differenze, questo sia un posto in cui mi sento veramente a casa e dove mi sento amata. Yes, I have lots of different snapshots of this place at different times in my life. Marveling at fireflies when I was a kid, hanging out with other teenagers in the square when I was young, watching my mom grow into her true self more by experiencing life here when I was a little older. I have made connections with people here whom I love, and who I consider family. I feel that, for whatever reason, it's a place that marks different milestones in my life and I appreciate the opportunities I've had to come back again and again. It is meaningful to me that despite the distance and the differences, this is a place I truly feel at home and where I feel loved. 8- Pensi che ci tornerai ancora? 8-Do you think u will be back again? -Assolutamente sì! c'è una probabilità del 100% che tornerò. Absolutely, there is a 100% chance I'll be back. 9-Cosa di San Godenzo ti piacerebbe mettere in valigia da portare con te negli Stati Uniti? 9-Waht about San Godenzo u would like pack in you bagagges to bringh with u in USA? La semplice sensazione di incontrare i tuoi amici in strada e goderti un momento spontaneo con loro. L'acqua potabile fresca che scorre dalle montagne e i pasti cucinati in casa (ovviamente). The easy feel of meeting your friends in the street and enjoying a spontaneous moment with them. The fresh drinking water that flows from the mountains, and the home cooked meals (of course). 10-Sai cosa significa Fiorino? 10- Do u know what FIORINO means? Se ho capito bene, Fiorino si riferisce alla moneta toscana che è stata emessa dal 1200 al 1500. Questa è stata una delle prime monete coerenti in termini di valore e utilizzata nel commercio internazionale, e quindi ha contribuito a stabilire Firenze come una città potente e vitale sul palco del mondo. Ne ho ricevuto una replica e ora la indosso al collo come portafortuna e come simbolo di connessione attraverso i confini nazionali. If I understand correctly, Fiorino refers to the Tuscan coin that was minted from the 1200's to the 1500's. This was one of the first coins consistent in value and used in international trade, and thus helped establish Florence as a powerful and vital city on the stage of the world. I was gifted the replica of one, and now I wear it around my neck for good luck and a symbol of connection across national borders. 11-Tu sai che molti italiani vorrebbero vivere in USA? Cosa diresti loro? 11-Do you know that a lot of Italian people, would love live in USA? What u should say to them? Venite! :) Ciò che rende forti gli Stati Uniti sta proprio nel fatto che così tante persone di paesi diversi vivono insieme e imparano gli uni dagli altri, quindi sarebbe davvero un grande vantaggio per noi. Esiste già una forte cultura di italo-americani (specialmente in luoghi come New York City), i cui antenati hanno fatto grandi sacrifici per stabilirsi lì e la cui cultura ha influenzato così tanto la nostra. Chi pensa di visitarli, dovrebbe cogliere l'occasione e farlo! Il mio consiglio è di non lasciare che la cultura o la barriera linguistica fermino. Se non visitassimo mai luoghi perché non parliamo la stessa lingua, nessuno andrebbe da nessuna parte. Soprattutto adesso con strumenti come Google Translate, penso che se ti concentri sulla persona con cui stai comunicando puoi farti capire. Quando verrai, ricorda solo che c'è un compromesso in termini di convenienza: ad esempio, puoi trovare negozi di alimentari aperti 24 ore al giorno, ma i trasporti pubblici non sono così affidabili. Consiglio vivamente di risparmiare denaro per noleggiare un'auto se desideri più libertà durante il tuo soggiorno. E chiamami! Proverò a restituire parte dell'ospitalità toscana che mi è stata data nel corso degli anni. Come on over! :) Seriously, what makes the US strong is that so many different kinds of people from so many different places live together and learn from each other, so really it would be a great benefit for us if they moved there. Already there is a strong culture of Italian-Americans, especially in places like New York City, whose ancestors made big sacrifices to come there and whose culture has influenced so much of our own. Even if someone is just thinking of visiting, they should take the chance and do it! Don't let things like culture or language barrier stop you- if we never visited places because we didn't speak the language no one would go anywhere. Especially these days with tools like Google Translate, I think as long as you focus on the connection to the person you're communicating with you can make yourself understood. Just remember that there is a trade off in conveniences. For example, you can find groceries stores open 24 hours a day, but public transport is not as reliable. I'd highly recommend saving money to rent a car if you want more freedom during your visit. And give me a call! I'll try to return some of the Tuscan hospitality I've been given over the years.
